Metalogix Releases Solution for SharePoint-BPOS Migration
By
David Rubinstein
December 14, 2010 —
As Microsoft signals its move to cloud-based computing with Office 365 and SharePoint Online, Metalogix wants to help companies follow along by introducing SharePoint Migration Manager for BPOS-D—Microsoft’s Business Productivity Online Suite for dedicated users.
The goal is to help organizations move their content into a dedicated hosted environment, according to company CEO Steven Murphy. “People are talking about co-existence,” he told SPTechWeb. “They still have their environment in-house and want to test the cloud offering. It’s a good way to work in parallel, and when they’re comfortable, they can move more content into the cloud.”
Metalogix claims to be the only vendor with solutions certified for the BPOS-D platform. “We’re in a unique position because of the history of the company in content management reorganization,” Murphy said.
Cloud computing is “seeing a maturity and an evolution,” he said. “We’re seeing a tremendous amount of push on the SharePoint side” for cloud engagement.
This is particularly useful for organizations that have data they want to protect, but also need to provide to their partners and customers, because that can be done more easily in the cloud, said Stephen Cawood, Metalogix’s director of community and support services. “These are people looking for the opportunity to move part of their data back and forth from the cloud to on-premise” and vice versa, he said.
The migration tool includes Metalogix Extensions Web Service, which provides a connection option to get to the SharePoint Server through Web services, Cawood said. It also supports a direct connection through the SharePoint API, he added.
“Customers can install the client app, access their on-premises environment and sync to a SharePoint environment in the cloud. Then you simply copy and paste data to migrate,” he explained. “This allows you to split up data for on-premise or the cloud, or give you co-existence options.”
Metalogix offers flexible licensing terms for Software-as-a-Service, perpetual or capacity models.
